Early Half Eagles 1808 $5 Close 5D, BD-3, R.4, MS61 NGC

Early Half Eagles
1808 $5 Close 5D, BD-3, R.4, MS61 NGC. Bass-Dannreuther Die State a/d, reverse lightly lapped. The 5D in the denomination are closely spaced on this variety. John Dannreuther estimates a survivorship of 100 to 125 pieces, which is significant for an early half eagle issue, although BD-3 is still inherently challenging for most collectors to acquire. This Mint State example displays an even, well-centered strike with excellent sharpness throughout the border stars and central devices. Bright yellow-gold luster is pleasing, and scattered handling marks are not bothersome for the grade. The NGC insert is autographed by Guide Book Editor Emeritus Kenneth Bressett.
Ex: Dallas Signature (Heritage, 10/2019), lot 3241.
